Al-Jawf (The Oral Cavity)
Articulation Points
الجوف
The empty space of the mouth and throat, from which the three madd letters emerge.
When it applies
- ا
- و
- ي
How to pronounce it
No part of the mouth touches another. The sound is shaped only by the space itself, which is why these letters can be held.
Worked examples
Each is cited so you can find it in the mushaf and check it yourself.
| Reference | Example | Note |
|---|---|---|
| 1:2 | الْعَالَمِينَ | Alif from the cavity. |
Common mistakes
- Constricting the throat, which colours the vowel.
- Confusing the madd waw with the consonant waw.
