Questions about the surahs

Which surahs should a child memorise first?

Usually the short surahs at the end of the mushaf, because they are short enough to hold and are the ones recited in every prayer. A tutor will set the order against what the child can already read.

Are Makki and Madani labels about place or period?

Period. A surah is classed as Makki if it was revealed before the migration to Madinah and Madani if after, regardless of where the Prophet ﷺ was at the time.

Why do the ayah counts differ between mushafs?

Because there are several accepted ways of numbering ayahs, inherited from different schools of recitation. The counts here follow the Uthmani numbering used in the most widely printed mushafs.

Do I need to read Arabic to start?

No. Noorani Qaida starts at the individual letters and assumes nothing. Adults beginning from zero take the same route as children.
