Quran Reading Basics for New Muslims
Quran Reading Basics for new muslims, taught one to one in 45-minute lessons, 1–3 lessons a week. Reading the mushaf slowly and accurately, one line at a time, with a teacher correcting every error.
Lesson length and why
Forty-five minutes, with time set aside for questions. Nothing is assumed as already known, including vocabulary other students take for granted.
Where most students start
No Arabic, and often no background knowledge to hang it on. Frequently learning to pray at the same time as learning to read.
What is expected at home
None.
How long it takes
Quran Reading Basics typically runs 12–36 weeks at 1–3 lessons a week. The range is wide because it moves with revision between lessons more than with anything that happens in them.
What is covered
- 1Recognising letters in all four positions
- 2Short vowels and sukun
- 3Joining into words
- 4Reading a full ayah unaided
What usually gets in the way
Specific to new muslims — these are the things that actually derail progress for this group.
- Being taught by people who assume prior knowledge
- Terminology used without explanation
- Needing salah before reading fluency
By the end
- Read a page of the mushaf without prompting
- Recognise every letter shape reliably
